Know Your Handloom Series “DOLABEDI”

Facts of my dolabedi which I have learnt from my sources who weave the craft.. READ READ READ

Sarees from Sonepur are highly regarded for their superior quality mulberry silk and the subtle yet gorgeous weight of the fabric. The Dolabedi saree is a relatively new weave that takes inspiration from the Dola festival, which is celebrated a day before Holi. The small palanquins carrying Radha Krishna idols from local temples, or chalanti pratima, are the inspiration behind this weave. It has nothing to do with Lord Jagannath, as he is a separate entity from Krishna, who is an avatar of Lord Vishnu. Dola Purnima is a celebrated festival at the Jagannath temple, but the inspiration for Dolabedi sarees comes from the palanquins. Sonepur is the main place where these sarees are woven, but they are also made in Nuapatna using silk and in Gopalpur using Tussar silk.

The handloom sector in Odisha is diverse, with various types of ikats and extra-weft sarees. The names of the sarees vary according to the place and inspiration. We will cover this topic later.

These sarees are available to purchase on our website, or you can DM us on WhatsApp to place an order. Keep following us for more interesting facts about handmade sarees from Odisha.

PS: I acquired my knowledge by talking to various weavers and not here to defame or demean anyone. I talk the facts as I got from talking to various people who know the craft and making it for generations.
